The Saucerer is the boss faced on Katina in Star Fox 64 and Star Fox 64 3D. After you take out 10 enemy air crafts, Bill will report that an enemy mothership is approaching. After a short time, it will settle above the lone building on the level and the real battle will begin.

[edit] Tactics

[edit] Phase 1

This is the first boss faced in the game that has two distinct phases. In the first phase, you must destroy the 4 hatches on the underside to stop any more enemy air crafts from coming out. The hatches will open and close, but Bill will tell Fox over the comm., "The hatches are open!" and that will be the signal for Fox to go after the hatches. If you are going for the medal score on the Katina level(150 hits) then it is in the player's best interest to wait as long as possible to take out all of the hatches to rack up more hits. Once you destroy all 4 hatches, the 2nd phase will begin.

[edit] Phase 2

After destroying all 4 of the hatches or when enough time has passed by, the core of the Saucerer will appear. Bill will notice and tell everyone to standby to attack. You will have 1 minute(60 seconds) to destroy the core. You will need to come at it 2 or 3 times depending on how powerful your lasers are at this point in order to destroy the core. If you are successful, the Saucerer will fall to the ground and the player will be able to move on to Solar. If you are unable to destroy the core in time, it will fire off a deadly laser that takes out the building its hovering over, forcing the player to move on to Sector X.

[edit] Trivia

The Saucerer is extremely similar to the alien motherships seen in the 1996 film, Independence Day, and is quite possibly based off of them as Star Fox 64 was released a year later in 1997.
